Health & Lifestyle

LIFESTYLE – Most Cancer Physicians feel that cancer survivors and people interested in cancer prevention
should focus on healthy behaviors such as no tobacco in any form, low fat diet, alcohol in moderation.
Although older men may be psychologically more resistant to changing their lifestyle, the benefits can be
dramatic. The first recommendation made by oncologists to prevent cancer is to eliminate the use of tobacco
in any form.

Several studies have been done that strongly imply the beneficial effects of lifestyle changes for PCa patients:

Harvard Medical School

UCSF

DIET – Many studies show that the “western” diet is associated with higher rates of PCa. Particularly, diets
high in animal fat and sugars are linked to higher incidence of PCa and Colo-rectal cancers, among others.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) has an excellent free booklet on nutrition and lifestyle that can be
downloaded or ordered online.

EXERCISE - It is universally accepted that exercise is a critical factor in avoiding cardiovascular disease. Exercise
is also coming to be increasingly associated with improved outcomes of cancer treatments including
radiation and chemotherapy. Please see this article about exercise.
